Help me.
Zelda Gibson
4:12 p.m.
Apartment 7D
“Stella, I’m not kidding,” said Nicky.
“I’m not going to fall for some April Fools’ Day trick. Not now, not ever.” Stella stood in front of the mirror and stuck out her tongue.
“Bhat bo you sink of bierced pongues?” she asked.
“What?” Nicky shook his head and scowled.
Stella slipped her tongue back into her mouth. “What do you think of pierced tongues?”
“I think they’re disgusting,” said Nicky. “And if you do pierce yours, I’m going to tell Dad. Can we talk about this later? I need to show you something important.”
“Well, I’m not going to do it, but not because you’d tell Dad. Anyway, I know you wouldn’t. You’re too scared of him. I’m not doing it because I think it’s disgusting too. Wow, what do you know? There is something we agree on.”
“Stella, I’m not kidding. Grandma Zelda’s gone. I found a note that she wrote and it says ‘Help me’ on it, and now she’s missing. We’ve got to do something. Look.” Nicky held out the piece of paper with the words “Help me. Zelda Gibson” written on it for Stella to see.
“Yeah, right. I’ll believe that Grandma Zelda is missing and you happened to find this note if you’ll believe that Justin Bieber is my boyfriend.”
“But I’m not kidding.”
“So, have you told Dad, then? Don’t you think he should know? Grandma Zelda is his mother, after all.”
“I think you should tell him. He’ll believe it if you tell him, and I’ll get sent to my room and yelled at for lying if I tell him—even though I’m not lying. I swear I’m not. And I have proof. I have the note.”
“Nice try. I’m not falling for some April Fools’ trick. There’s no way in this world that I’d set myself up for a time-out by telling Dad some silly story about Grandma Zelda going missing and a ‘Help me’ note. Do you think I’m that dumb? I don’t think Dad much likes April Fools’ Day, and I don’t think you’re very funny with this whole Grandma Zelda missing story. Ugh, my room is starting to smell bad, and it’s not because of me. I think you’ve been in here for way too long. Aren’t you supposed to be in a time-out anyway? Dad!” Stella called out.
“You’re mean,” said Nicky. He slammed Stella’s door and stomped across the hallway into his room. He looked out his window. Where was Pigeon? Why didn’t she come back?
